While there is no exact information about when and how viral advertising emerged, there are several theories. One of them is that this advertising method was unconsciously started by the free e-mail service Hotmail. Hotmail, in its early days, automatically "Free…" at the bottom of every e-mail sent from its service in order to quickly reach the friends and families of its current members.
